HEALTH CONDITIONS

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
  • Drivers should be below 140/90 on the day of exam.

  • Do not smoke or consume caffiene prior to exam to prevent spiking blood pressure

DIABETES
  • A urine sample is required on the day of exam.

  • If positive for sugar/glucose a Hemoglobin HgA1C report no older than 6 months must be provided 

  • If using injectable insulin waiver must accompany card. See paperwork page to find a link.

HEART RELATED ISSUES

  •  At minimum, bring a letter from your cardiologist (heart specialist) that outlines your medical history and current medications and indicates you are safe to drive a DOT vehicle

  • You may also need to bring the results of a recent stress test, ECHO cardiogram, or other testing completed within the past 2 years

  • Current FMCSA guidelines require individuals who have undergone coronary artery bypass surgery to be recertified every year for 5 years, then undergo an ETT every 2 years.

  • Drivers who had a Pericutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)  are required to have an exercise tolerance test three to six months post PCI and EVERY TWO YEARS thereafter. For symptomatic individuals or if you had an abnormal resting  echocardiogram, or unable to meet requirements of the ETT a stress radionuclide or echocardiography imaging is required.

SLEEP APNEA

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and us a CPAP machine:

  • a reading of your machine should be brought to the medical exam appointment showing compliance of use

  • Bring approximately 90 days of data

  • a letter from your sleep specialist may be required.

EXERCISE TOLERENCE TEST GUIDELINES
  • This test requires exercising to workload capacity of at least six METS (through Bruce Stage II or equivalent)

  • Attaining a heart rate >85% of predicted maximum (unless on beta blockers)

  • A rise in SBP >20mmHg without angina

  • Having no significant ST segment depression or elevation
